Chiropractic Medicine

Chiropractic treatment is a holistic therapy which recognizes the overall health of the patient and the body’s natural ability to heal itself from any kind of stress (which could be physical, mental, or emotional) and trauma. Chiropractic medicine considers the relationship between spinal column, neurons, and the entire nervous system for the treatment.

The human nervous system consists of central nervous system consisting of brain and spinal cord, the automatic nervous system, and the peripheral nervous system including the somatic nervous system.

All the body’s tissues and organs are connected electrically to the spinal column. The spinal column is protected by twenty four bones which are known as vertebrae. The chiropractic treatment is based on the hypothesis that the misalignment of spinal cord affects other portions of the body creating pain, sometimes causing disease, and other musculoskeletal abnormalities.

Chiropractic medicine is quite popular for treatment to heal physical injuries that cause lower back pain, neck pain and some other internal disorders. When people want to avoid surgery for treatment of injuries like loose disk in the neck, slight scoliosis, and out of pace vertebrae, they use the alternative therapy of chiropractic medicine for treatment.

According to chiropractic practice, pathological disorders might get influenced by disturbances produced in the nervous system. There are many factors which might affect health adversely. They could include genetic or hereditary factors, improper rest, lack of exercise, inadequate and improper nutrition, eating foods contaminated with chemicals, water and air pollution, stress, bodily trauma, bacteria and viruses.

Almost any component of the nervous system may directly or indirectly cause reactions within any other component by means of reflex mediation. Correction of the spinal (manipulative) lesion is imperative for effective management of common functional disorders of motor structure and for pelvic discomfort.

The practice of chiropractic medicine was introduced to the modern world by Daniel David Palmer in 1895. But, the practice of spinal adjustment was well known in all ancient civilizations, including that of Egypt.

The most common therapeutic treatment involved in chiropractic medicine is known as “spinal manipulation” also known as “chiropractic adjustment”.

The purpose of this method is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that are restricted in their movement as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury might have been caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of heavy objects, or through repetitive stress which might be caused by sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. Manipulation or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues restores mobility thereby reducing pain and muscle tightness and allowing tissues to heal.

This gives an overview of chiropractic medicine in short.
