Headaches

Headache is one of the most frequent and common complains that anyone comes across. It is defined as the pain in the head. Medically the terminology “head” in this situation refers to the part above the eyes and the ears, behind the occipital, and in the back of the upper neck.

Types of headache: Headaches are basically of two types

  • Primary Headache which is not associated with other sickness.
  • Secondary Headache which is associated with other sickness.

Primary Headaches : It includes Tension Headache, Migraine Headache and Cluster Headaches

Tension Headache : The most common type of Primary Headache is the tension headache. This type of headache is more common among women than in men. About 90% of adults suffered or suffer or will suffer from tension headache. Tension headache is due to the contraction of the neck and head muscles. The causes of Tension Headache include :

  • Poor posture at work or during sleep,
  • Stress,
  • Strain on the eyes,
  • Fatigue,
  • Consumption of tobacco and alcohol,
  • In females, the hormonal changes that occur at every starting and ending of a menstrual cycle.

Migraine Headache : The second most common type of Primary Headache is the migraine headache. Approximately 12% of the population of the United States suffered or suffer or will suffer from migraine headache. This type of headache affects both children and adults. This type of headache is because of the constriction of the blood vessel of the neck and head. This decreases the flow of the blood to the blood vessels. It is usually a agonizing pain on one side of the head. One feels sick and is sensitive to sound and light. Some factors related to migraine are as follows:

  • The whole family suffers from migraine
  • The person undergoes prolonged tension and stress of muscles
  • The usage of alcohol and other intoxicants
  • Smoking of tobacco
  • No sleep
  • Usage of oral contraceptives

Cluster Headaches are rare. It is said to have affected only 0.1% of the population.

Secondary Headaches : The secondary headaches are related to sickness. This sickness can vary from life threatening conditions to less serious conditions. The life threatening conditions include strokes , subarachnoid hemorrhages, tumors and meningitis. The less serious condition include withdrawal symptoms due to addiction and then abstaining from consumption of teas, coffee, alcohol, smoking, etc.

Consult the Doctor if the headache is :

  • sudden, severe with nausea and vomiting
  • recurring and persistent
  • with high fever
  • with convulsions
  • there is difficulty controlling the arms and legs.
