Chiropractic is an alternative and complimentary health care professional. It focuses on diagnosis, treatment, prevention of mechanical disorders for the musculoskeletal system, prevention of the bad effect on the nervous system and prevention of harm to the general health. Chiropractic therapies mainly focus on the alignments and misalignments of the spine and the vertebral column.
Physical Therapy is also known as physiotherapy. Many people call Physical Therapy Training as Physiotherapy training.
Some of the chiropractors like to use the combination of Chiropractic therapies and Physical Therapy for faster and better recovery of the patient. Some of the chiropractors consider Physical Therapy a part of Chiropractic therapies while some consider it absolutely different. Whatever be the relation between the two it is a fact that a person before practicing both must have undergone a systematic formal training for both and should have at least a recognized certificate of one of them.
There are different types of Physical Therapies such as Cardiopulmonary physical therapy, Musculoskeltal (Orthopaedic) physical therapy , Integumentary physical therapy, Neurological physical therapy
If one wants to be employed and offer services as a physical therapist one should first undergo Physical Therapy Training from a recognized and accredited school. The institute should be recognized and registered with the local accrediting bodies and the university or the educational body. After the graduation or post graduation there is the requirement of passing the licentiate exam for the purpose of acquiring the license.
In most of the countries this license is required along with formal certification of graduation or post graduation from the university.
In most of the countries the duration of the graduate course offering the Bachelor degree in Physical Therapy or Physiotherapy is either 4 or 5 years. The duration of the course in UK is 3 years. The Eligibility criterion for pursuing this course differs from country to country. In some countries like the USA a student needs to complete an under graduate degree with science as the special subject and with high scores.
On the other hand in countries like UK and India the student after clearing the 12th standard or grade with very high scores in biology, physics, and chemistry can get admission to the 4 year graduation program. The theoretical components of the course are predominantly biology, basic anatomy, psychology, physics, kinesiology, physiology and goniometry.
In the latter part of the course the students have to take part in practical components concentrating on neuromuscular physiotherapy (notably Souvlis pain mechanisms), geriatric physiotherapy, Vicenzino Manipulations, women’s health, musculoskeletal physiotherapy, pediatric physiotherapy, cardiothoracic physiotherapy, and fire cupping. As the course progresses the clinical focus increase and in the final year it is maximum with practical placements at the clinics as an assistant under supervision of a licenses physical therapy practitioner.
