While it may seem that we can do no wrong when it comes to our health, people in their 20s and 30s need to see their doctor at least every two years because we can have problems too And even if you don’t do any of the above (we hate those people, by the way), finding a primary physician and seeing that doctor on a regular basis is a good way to catch things early.”If you catch diseases early, the outcome is always better,” said Dr. Sara Winkler, 32, who works with Capital Internal Medicine Associates in Holt. We spoke with some Lansing-area health professionals about what we invincible-types can do to stay healthy.


Stress kills


OK, that might be a bit dramatic but Dr. Elizabeth Hughes, 32, who works with Mid Michigan Physicians in Lansing, said stress is one of the biggest health risks for young adults.”A lot of 20- and 30-year-olds are just starting their career or families … this can cause stress,” she said.

Wondering if you’re stressed? Winkler said along with insomnia to look for these signs. “Do you have heart palpitations? Are you not able to control your eating? And any issues with anger outbursts you can’t control is a red flag.” People in that age group turn to smoking, overeating and drinking as a way to deal with stress instead of what they should be doing.

“I’m a big proponent of exercise,” said Hughes. “I think exercise is the best anti-depressant.” Winkler agrees, adding that even 30 minutes of walking a day can make a huge difference. She also suggests finding a form of meditation, whether it be yoga, Pilates or prayer.

“Any opportunity you take to stop the busyness,” said Winkler.


Sexual healing


Sexually active people in their 20s and 30s need to see their doctor regularly. “Sexually active women need to be checked every year,” said Winkler. During their annual pap smear, women are screened for STDs.

Sexually active men should also be tested annually for STDs but Hughes said unlike women, men usually show symptoms, which gets them to the doc. Remember, honesty is the best policy when you’re at the doctor. “Tell the truth about everything,” said Hughes. “If you drink, if you smoke, how many partners you have had sexually.” “Docs aren’t surprised about … your sexual habits,” said Winkler. “A lot of things doctors can see through but we shouldn’t have to play that game.”


Self health


Visiting your doctor regularly provides preventative care when it comes to your blood pressure, cholesterol, immunizations, body mass index (BMI) and more. But there are things you can and should be doing on your own to stay on top of your health. Women need to do monthly breast exams. Winkler said a good time is two to three days after the first day of your period.”You have to watch for any lumps or bumps,” she added. Men need to do monthly testicular exams, looking for any lumps or swelling.


Both men and women need to do skin checks.


“See if you have any new moles or if moles are changing,” said Hughes. Winkler said it’s also a good idea to have a friend check your back or places you can’t see regularly for the same thing.


Finding a physician


When you think you’re invincible or if you don’t have health insurance, there seems little reason to have a primary care physician. As a result, many 20- and 30-somethings head straight to an urgent care for the common cold or when they slice open their finger. While this can be useful in a pinch, Winkler advises against it.

“Hopping from urgent cares is not the best way to protect your health,” she said. “Likely you’re missing out on preventative care.” As noted earlier, there are many reasons people at our age need regular check-ups and seeing the same doctor is a good way to go. Both Hughes and Winkler say your first step in finding a primary care physician is to ask friends and family members for recommendations. You’ll also want to make sure your insurance company covers visits to the doctor you choose.


Then it’s time for your meet and greet.


“You just go and interview. Find somebody you have a good working relationship with,” said Hughes.Beyond preventative care, having a primary physician is worthwhile because they know you and your medical and social history.”Having a relationship with somebody and not having that added stress (of meeting someone new) when you get sick (is beneficial),” said Winkler. “They know your story.”You’re also more likely to be open with someone you know. “Communication with physicians is important,” she added.


At the appointment


Doctor appointments can be stressful if you’re not used to them. Winkler has an easy solution.”(Put your) own list (of questions) together,” she said. She suggests keeping it in your wallet and adding to it as health concerns come up. You also need a list of all the medications you’re taking, how often you take them and at what dose. Be sure to ask about possible side effects of any prescriptions you are given while at the appointment.


Healthy habits

The one piece of advice Winkler gives to all people in their 20s and 30s: “Don’t smoke!”

If you do smoke, quit.”The quicker that you can quit, the better off you’ll be,” she said.


Hughes’ advice is broader.


“Make the lifestyle choices you know are right,” she said.Both doctors agree check-ups at this age are worthwhile.”It’s easier to maintain a healthy lifestyle now than later,” said Hughes.


No insurance?


If you’re like many in their 20s and 30s, you may not have health insurance so seeing the doctor is not only a low priority, it’s an expensive one. If that’s the case, look into your county health plan. We spoke with Robin Reynolds, executive director of the Ingham County Health Plan, about what it is and who is eligible.


For Plan B, a person must:


Be at 250 percent of the poverty level. (For a family of one, that’s $25,525 per year. For a family of four, that’s $51,625).Have no other option for medical coverage. As in, your employer can not offer an insurance plan.

The plan provides preventative care, but it does not cover emergency room visits or impatient care. You are assigned a physician. When it comes to your health, it’s easy to overlook care for a part of your body that you use every day: your teeth. Dr. Megan Stowers, 26, of Grand Ledge is part of a private practice in Lansing and said the main thing people in their 20s and 30s can do to keep their teeth healthy is “a regular dental visit every six months.” You also have to “brush and floss two times a day,” she added. And just as it’s a detriment to overall health, Stowers said smoking and chewing tobacco are harmful to your dental health.


“It can advance bone disease,” she said.


Watching your intake of sugar and knowing how much sugar is in your drinks is also important, said Stowers.Most know that pop is loaded with sugar, but “some of the sports drinks have sugar in them,” she said. When it comes to finding a dentist, the same rules of finding a doctor apply – ask friends and family and make sure your insurance will cover the dentist you pick. Once at the dentist’s office Stowers said there are a few things patients need to share.

“If they’ve had any problems with local anesthesia, (their) expectations … what they like and don’t like about their teeth (and) if they’re interested in anything cosmetic.”From there, Stowers said a dentist can recommend treatment or refer to you to a specialist.


“We can educate you about different treatment options that are there,” she said.


Visiting the dentist every six months does more than help your dental health, however. Often the dentist is the first to notice signs of heart disease, oral cancer, diabetes and more. And, of course, having a nice white smile is another huge benefit.


“(Your) appearance,” said Stowers. “The psychological things that go on with a healthy smile.”
